There are two kinds of software solutions for businesses today: canned solutions and custom solutions.

“Canned” solutions are bought off the shelf, installed on your system, and do what they do. Often, they try to be all things to all businesses, and that usually means they do a lot of things you don't need or can't use because they don't fit your business. The code of the software is proprietary - - the company that released the software owns it - - and that means it can't be modified to fit your needs. In essence, businesses are forced to adapt the way they work to the software, or live with less than they need.

Custom solutions, though, don't have those limitations. If you can identify a need, or explain a process, the software can be built to do that for you. In this way, a custom solution is adapted to the way your business runs, and has only what you need.
